The Commission (co-)finances projects and other initiatives for the implementation of the European Union policies and legislation throughout the European Union and further afield.
The activities of the Directorate-General for Environment (DG ENV) are financed mainly through the LIFE programme, the European Union’s programme supporting environment, biodiversity and nature throughout the Union. Some actions for the Marine Environment are also funded under the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund.
In addition, DG ENV is entrusted by the Budgetary Authority with the management of a few pilot projects and/or preparatory actions. They aim at testing new environmental policy initiatives and/or preparing the ground for the adoption of future measures.
The bulk of the grants is managed by the Executive Agency for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises. In specific cases, grants are also managed by DG ENV. The calls for proposals are published on the EASME webpage or in the grants section of this webpage.
Through calls for tender, DG ENV purchases services, goods or works.
LIFE also provides financing opportunities in form of loans or equity investments for revenue-generating or cost-saving pilot projects promoting the preservation of natural capital, including climate change adaptation projects, through the Natural Capital Financing Facility (NCFF).
