2021 Applicant Workshop

The Applicant Workshop for the 2021 European Green Capital Award (EGCA) competition cycle was held on Monday 2 July 2018 in Brussels. The day provided potential applicants with an overview of the competition and communications process, Expert Panel advice, insights from previous winners and networking opportunities.


There were a number of guest speakers at the workshop accompanied by advice from the Secretariat. All information from the workshop is available below:

1. Introduction to the Secretariat – We’re here to help

Overview of the Secretariat, its role in the whole process and how the Secretariat can help applicant cities. View the presentation.

2. Overview of the 2021 Evaluation and Assessment Process

Louise Connolly of the EGCA Secretariat presented an overview of the application form and guidance note content, and an overview of how applications are assessed. View the presentations here and here.

3. Expert Panel Guidance

Three expert panel members shared tips and advice on what makes a quality application and what impresses the expert evaluation panel. Ms. Birgit Georgi spoke about Climate Change: Adaptation, Mr. Warren Phelan discussed Waste and Mr. Alex Minshull spoke about Governance via video. View Mr. Alex Minshull’s video presentation.

4. Communications

The Secretariat presented key elements to consider and include in the application and presentation to the Jury along with a summary of the competition branding rules. View the presentation.

5. Key elements for a winning bid

Anita Landahl Trosdahl from Oslo, winner of the 2019 European Green Capital Award, shared Oslo’s experiences in applying and key elements of their bid which they believe were crucial to winning. View the presentation.
