Eco-innovation inputs

Eco-innovation inputs comprise investments (financial resources, human resources, technical resources) that provide an initiative for eco-innovation activities at companies, research organisations, and other institutions. Thus, eco-innovation investments are an important determinant of eco-innovation performance at the level of companies, sectors and countries.

TRENDS, COMPARISONS AND RELATED INDICATORS
Correlation between governmental spending on R&D in environmental and energy fields and patent filing

Datasource: EIO calculation based on Eurostat and Patstat data

Does the government's investments in environmental and energy R&D translate into higher invention outputs (patents)?

Higher investments in the R&D in environmental and energy topics results in the better inventive perfomance in companis and reserach organisations. This trend is expecially seen in case of countries with nigher patenting performance, like Finland, Germany, France, Austria and Denmark

Eco-innovation index VS Environmental Policy Stringency (EPS) Index, selected EU countries

Datasource: OECD

Does the stringency of environmental policy explains the eco-innovation performance across counties?

In countries like Denmark, Finland, Germany and Sweden stricter environmental policies correlate with better eco-innovation performance. However, in the Netherlands where EPS index is very high, the eco-innovation performance is less impressive. In other countries, environmental regulations have not yet translated in better eco-innovation performance;

Investment in cleantech by technology fields total globally, 2006-2015

Datasource: Cleanctech.com

What of the global trend in investment in various technologies fields across years?

Overall investment in cleantech technologies has been increasing since early 2000s and peaked in 2012. The highest investments are in energy generation technologies, energy efficiency and transport technologies. However the investments are growing also in the field of recycling, advanced materials, water technologies and agriculture and food.

Size of S&T workforce and Eco-innovation performance, 2015

Datasource: Eurostat

Do countries with larger pool of scence and technology (S&T) workers perform better in eco-innovation?

Larger population of S&T workers does not neccesarily translate in beter eco-innovation performance. Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Sweden and Luxembourg have smaller population of S&T workforce, however their eco-innovation performance is relatively high. Poland with relatively large pool of scentists has poor performance in eco-innovation.
