This project aims to break through market barriers that hinder the introduction of bio-based modified wood, an ecoalternative to environmental unsound construction materials. Market introduction will be focussed on environmental aware markets like the Benelux, Scandinavia and Germany. The consortium partners, consisting of 3 SME’s and a large company, developed a new environmental friendly wood modification technology/product: In-Situ Wood Bio- Polymerization. Fast growing softwood is impregnated with a water-soluble thermoset resin which is produced from agricultural crop waste (bagasse). The specs of this modified wood equal the properties of tropical hardwood and therefore form an attractive alternative to hardwood and other construction materials with a negative environmental impact. The project starts in September 2013 and will have a duration of three years.

Benefits

The ISWBP technology offers an attractive alternative to tropical hardwood from fast growing pine.

Results

  • ISWBP offers a bio based substitute for products that are becoming more and more scarce and expensive, while fast growing wood and bagasse will remain widely available. Future availability of bio-based feedstock and fast growing wood species offers a sustainable long-term business perspective.
  • ISWBP provides sustainable and easy to use alternative to conventional wood preservation technologies and tropical hardwood. Fast market uptake of a radical new offering increases the competitiveness of the European industrial timber sector.
  • ISWBP generates new insights and information concerning LCA based on demo’s.
  • ISWBP provides new opportunities for substitution of hardwood. Besides this, conventional impregnated wood and other wood modification techniques markets will be targeted as well. The business plan aims to reach a market share of 10% in 2020.
