INTRODUCTION IN THE MARKET OF A NEW HIGH QUALITY ORGANIC FERTILIZER OBTAINED BY THE USE OF POULTRY DEJECTION (FERPODE)

The main objective of FERPODE is to place on the market a new high quality organic fertilizer obtained by the use of poultry dejection, laying hens manure (LHM), according to a European patent pending process. LHM is a biomass, containing as much organic C as an amendment, and almost as much N as a marketable fertilizer with improved drying. The innovation of this FERPODE proposal is connected both to the manufacturing process and to induced properties such as N slowly released that determines the high quality. The main features of this product as FERPODE project result are the reduced salinity and the nitrogen component whose specific properties distinguish this product from the others available on the market. The nitrogen combines an ammoniac based component, with prompt release, with another component having a scheduled release. The tests have shown that the latest portion is much higher in poultry manure treated than in the common poultry manure dried and composted in a traditional way. The special poultry manure combines the sheltering action, supplying soil with organic substances (C), with the fertilizing action (N), as the soil is supplied with nutritive elements.

Results

  • The project product vision is to place on the market a quality organic fertilizer minimizing operations and costs. Market is constituted by end-users, who are farmers, from small owners to big farming companies.
  • The main result of this FERPODE proposal will be an innovative organic fertilizer obtained recycling waste and could partially substitute mineral fertilizer (i.e. urea and superphosphates). The project result will be obtained by an innovative process based on the use of vegetable extracts added at the beginning of maturation process in a static heap/pile, which requires low energy input and no water. This means that process is sustainable (matter recovery, waste prevention, low environmental impact) and final product (special poultry manure) is environmentally friendly.
  • Furthermore it is a mature and dry poultry manure, biostabilized and it has no consequences in case of overdose. Poultry dejections have always been used in agriculture for the vegetables’ nourishment. They are composed of organic substance, fertilizing elements (macro, meso and micro) and microorganism: almost 30% of the dry substance is composed by microorganism.
  • The introduction of advanced work procedures would allow the consolidation and generation of new employments in the European agricultural sector, creating new skills for the farmer production cycle, new interest of the research and innovation in this specific sector and new markets related to the commercialization of the FERPODE product at lower cost and with a higher respect of environmental issues.
