A European system for collecting and recycling discarded equipment from the fishing and fish farming industry (EUFIR)

Download PDFDownload PDF
The object for this project is to establish a European system for colleting and recycling discarded equipment from the fishing and fish farming industry. There are two problem areas related to this that are highlighted within the EU: The sea of plastic (the plastic soup) and ghost fishing. • The plastic soup represent masses of plastic debris floating around at sea disturbing ecological balance. • Ghost fishing is the term used for lost or abandoned fishing gear that continues to catch fish. In recent experiments in Canada, it was estimated that ghost fishing accounted for seven percent of total landings. In this project we will establish a European system for collecting discarded equipment, dismantle the equipment, and recycling the different fractions. Through this system, we will reduce oil consumption and CO2 emission, as well as decrease plastic waste to sea and plastic waste to landfills.

Benefits

Reduce oil consumption and CO2 emission through recycling discarded equipment from the fishing and fish farming industry in Europe.
