Description: The Coato environmental management project aims to promote sustainable production and distribution in agriculture. It includes activities aimed at increasing the environmental awareness and commitment of its thousands of co-op members and workers, encouraging them to change over to farming methods and industrial activities that focus on sustainable development (integrated and ecologically sound agricultural methods). It also promotes the implementation of environmental management systems (ISO 14001 and EMAS), while improving product quality and quality management (ISO 9002 and HACCP, among others). To this end, it developed the QIC (Quality and Integral Control) system that includes the application of product quality standards, quality management and environmental protection in all process phases, from cultivation to delivery to the client.

Project title: OATS - A novel approach to gasoline desulphurisation
Description: Inventing a process that simplifies the removal of sulphur from gasoline, BP has positioned itself as a pro-active leader in delivering ultra-low sulphur, cleaner fuels well before regulations are enacted. FCC (fluidised catalytic cracking) naphtha is the dominant source of sulphur in gasoline. The OATSTM process (Olefin Alkylation of Thiophenic Sulphur), developed by BP, is capable of removing over 99.5% of the sulphur compounds in FCC naphtha.

Project title: Catalyst regeneration- an entirely new process
Description: SCR-denox catalysts are needed for the removal of nitrogen oxides in flue gases of power plants, waste and hazardous waste incinerators and a number of other industrial processes. During operation, catalysts lose their activity because of chemical poisoning. This phenomenon is well known and occurs, in varying degrees, in all SCR-denox applications. Integral Umwelt has developed a new, highly efficient process for the regeneration of catalysts which provides an innovative and environmentally friendly procedure to save natural resources. Integral's regeneration method is already patented in a number of countries. Further development and improvement of the process is underway.

Project title: Merlin - New boiling system for the brewing of beer
Description: Introduced jointly by the Luxembourg brewery Bofferding and the German developer of brewing-technology Steinecker, this project involves the development of a new boiling system, "Merlin", that considerably reduces both the consumption of energy and of raw materials during the major part of the beer-brewing process. In addition, Merlin treats the beer gently. Bofferding took the risk to be the first industrial user of Merlin, thus helping to demonstrate the merits of the technology developed by Steinecker. It should be mentioned that Bofferding decided to invest in Merlin, despite the fact that conventional systems had recently been installed. This underlines the risk taken and the ecological and economic potential which the new system was expected to deliver.

Project title: Realisation of a carpet manufacturing technology by using an ultrasonic welding technique, enabling the complete elimination of whatever glue or foreign adhesive

Achmea Schadeservice's green car insurance policy has a very simple concept: clients with a green policy have their car repaired with used original parts. Implementation of this concept is, however, not as simple as it may seem at first glance. The insurance company must be able to guarantee the overall result. This implies amongst other things:

  • the installation of a system for matching supply and demand of used parts;
  • the selection, certification and education of car dismantlers;
  • the organisation of efficient logistics;
  • the guaranteed quality of the used parts;
  • the guaranteed quality of the repair job;
  • revised business conditions for body shops (as the profit margin on new parts is larger; consequently the insurance company must raise the labour rate in order to compensate for the loss of margin on parts).

Project title: Solar tile
Description: Gea-sol's Solar Tile is a functional roof cover allowing the absorption and transformation of the sun's energy into heat. In the Solar Tile's hollow inner compartment, a fluid is heated by the sun using the greenhouse effect. The Solar Tile is designed for the heating of water (for domestic use or swimming pools) as well as for spatial heating. The Solar Tile provides the user with the option to carry out a functional up-grade, making it possible to use solar energy for air-conditioning and electricity generation. The Solar Tile is a cost-effective solution that will facilitate wider use of solar energy as a renewable source of energy, resulting in a considerable reduction in environmental pollution, energy savings and improvement in the quality of people's lives.

Project title: Green Light Traffic Signal
Description: TT Solution has developed a new, innovative traffic light which offers many advantages over traditional traffic lights, including energy conservation, the use of environmentally-sound material (aluminium), less or almost no operation and maintenance costs, increased safety, and elegant design. Rapid developments in semiconductor technology have made it possible to produce a light-emitting diode (LED) with the internationally required standard specifications. Light-emitting diodes have many advantages compared to traditional bulbs. First and foremost, the production processes and materials used are environmentally sound, they use considerably less energy than traditional bulbs, and they have a lifetime which is typically over 10 years. The short lifetime of traditional bulbs (typically 11 months with a burning time factor of 60%), means that bulbs must be changed once a year. In addition, the design of the new traffic lights will mean that light lenses will not longer need to be regularly cleaned which, combined with the LED, will make the new lights practically maintenance free.

Project title: Utilisation of residues from oil palm cultivation to produce fibre boards in Malaysia
Description: The Institute has developed a technology for producing fibre boards from residues of palm oil production, in co-operation with leading European industrial partners in the field. In Malaysia, 40 million tonnes of biomass waste originate each year from oil palm cultivation. This is either burnt or stored under conditions, which do not meet the standards customary in Western Europe. On the other hand, there is an increasingly short supply of small timber from rubberwood plantations, posing the threat of an increased impact on high-quality tropical timber.
