Civil society actors were natural partners for the WSSD preparations.
Therefore the Commission set up a European Civil Society and
Private Sector Steering Group. To keep the Steering Group to a manageable
size, but at the same time reach a wide group of different stakeholders,
the Commission invited umbrella organisation representing a
large European constituency to the table.
The Steering Group aimed at ensuring civil society and private sector
involvement in the international preparatory meetings and in the WSSD. The outcome of the work of the Steering Group provided
input for defining the EU position for Johannesburg. The Steering
Group had a very diverse membership, which meant that consensus
or a commonly agreed platform were not being expected as the outcome
of the process
The Steering Group convened six times. Five meetings took place
before the World Summit and offer the Steering Group members the
possibility to share their views, ideas and proposals with regard
to the topics on the agenda of the Summit with the Commission and
the other Steering Group members. A final meeting took place after
the World Summit to discuss its outcomes and possibilities to work
together in a follow-up process.
