*   1st MEETING OF THE SMAP CORRESPONDENTS

The  first  SMAP  Correspondents meeting  took  place in Brussels on 16-17 November 1998 and  was attended by more than 50  participants  from the 27 Euro-Mediterranean Partners. It was chaired by DG ENV. Representatives of the NGOs Steering Committee were invited and attended as observers.

The major items of the the agenda were:

- Review the implementation of SMAP at regional and national levels

- Input from NGOs

- Review the submitted 1998 regional projects

- Follow-up procedures and actions

After evaluation of the 15 regional project proposals submitted to DG Environment, 7 projects were short-listed. These seven regional environmental projects were presented to the Euro-Med Committee (Brussels, 25 November 1998) and to the MED Committee (Brussels, 23 November 1999) and they were endorsed. They are now following the procedure foreseen, in view of being financed and implemented as part of the MEDA Regional Indicative Programme. The 6 projects finally retained correspond to a total amount of EC contribution of more than 6 million Euro.
