José Lopes, Head of Technical Excellence, Jaguar Land Rover Ltd

José Lopes joined the then Rover Group (including Land Rover) as a graduate in 1989, working within Research and Development in different Engineering roles, on Land Rover and Jaguar projects. Since Mid 2008, José has been Head of Technical Excellence for Jaguar Land Rover, as a direct report to the JLR board member for Engineering. He has responsibility for the development and nurturing of engineering skills and competencies within the company. This includes developing the skills needed to support the company’s advanced low-carbon vehicle development and research, and ensuring that new engineering graduates and higher apprentices are given the necessary skills to support future growth. He leads on promoting engineering to young people though direct involvement with activities, such as “The Big Bang Fair” and other initiatives which seek to raise the profile of the advanced engineering sector to the government and the public at large. José is directly involved with a number of UK universities and, in partnership with Warwick Manufacturing Group, is Jaguar Land Rover’s lead on curriculum development for the new University Technical College at the University of Warwick. He also chairs the Industrial Advisory Board of Aston University Engineering School and is the Jaguar Land Rover campus recruitment lead for Oxford University. He has recently been appointed the chair of the Skills group of UK Automotive Council. José is a Chartered Engineer, has a Master of Philosophy in Applied Physics and is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering & Technology, and a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
