Opening session: Water resources: policies for Europe and the world

22 May - 14:30 - 16:00

A densely populated continent notable for its industrial regions and its intensive agriculture, Europe faces numerous threats to its waters. Powerful legislation is already in place, but greater efforts are needed to ensure its full implementation. This opening session will set the scene for the week's discussions, looking back at the achievements of the past few decades, summarising recent assessments of the state of Europe's freshwater resources, looking forward to the Blueprint to Safeguard Europe's Water Resources to appear this autumn, and asking how these water resources will hold up, as the population grows and climate change becomes more intense.
