Side session: EU Freshwater policy – presentation by the House of Lords EU Committee

23 May - 14:30 - 16:00

Salon Rouge

In anticipation of the European Commission’s “Blueprint to Safeguard Europe’s Waters”, the EU Sub-Committee on Agriculture, Fisheries and Environment of the House of Lords conducted an inquiry into EU freshwater policy between autumn 2011 and spring 2012. Key concerns to the committee included the adaptability of the current policy framework to emerging new challenges, whether the policy framework should allow greater flexibility to local determination of water quality, and how well other EU policies like the CAP interact with the objectives of water resource management. Evidence was taken from a range of stakeholders, and a report with recommendations and conclusions is being published in the first half of May 2012. This event will present an overview of recommendations and conclusions, followed by discussion.
