4.6 Resource efficiency and the water industry

The EU Water Industry has been providing water services to citizens for decades, but its piecemeal development has resulted in a complex weave of institutional arrangements involving public and private actors. The ensemble now faces an important test – providing a safe affordable water supply to EU consumers, while carefully managing the environmental consequences of this use. This session will present the many facets of the water industry, showcasing different sectors and dimensions such as the demands of society, the cost of water services, cost recovery and funding. How can these many challenges be met in the current context, and can this most vital resource be managed in a more efficient manner?
