4.1 Sustainable navigation on the Danube: challenge or opportunity?
In partnership with DG Mobility and Transport

22 May - 16.30 - 18.00

South-east Europe has a growing economy, and a need for sustainable infrastructure that will underpin that growth. Local rail and road networks are being modernised but their capacity is limited, and the pollution and congestion they can bring sometimes impacts on the surrounding environment even before they are completed. The Danube – Europe's natural backbone – offers reserve transport capacity, but a balanced approach will be needed if severe impacts on this living habitat are to be avoided. This session will ask if navigation on the river can be developed in a sustainable manner, blending transport expansion with tourism, water management, flood protection and new business practices.
