Professor Michael Scoullos

Michael J. Scoullos, Environmental Chemist (MSc, DSc University of Athens) and Oceanographer (PhD University of Liverpool). Professor of Environmental Chemistry at the University of Athens, Director of the Laboratory of Environmental Chemistry. He has also worked for years on issues of Environmental Policies, Environmental Diplomacy and Environmental Education/Education for Sustainable Development. He represents, as an expert, the European Parliament on the Management Board and the Executive Bureau of the European Environmental Agency (EEA).

He has acted as scientific advisor to the EU, UNEP, UNESCO, IFAD, IUCN, several Governments and is now the Team Leader of the Capacity Building Component of the EU Progamme Horizon 2020, Chairman of International panel of Experts of the World Bank for the Red Sea – Dead Sea Conveyor, etc. President for many years of many scientific and environmental organizations and bodies such as MIO-ECSDE (Mediterranean Information Office for Environment, Culture and Sustainable Development), the Global Water Partnership-Mediterranean (GWP-Med), the EEB (European Environmental Bureau), Elliniki Etairia (Hellenic Society for the Protection of the Environment and the Cultural Heritage), the Greek National Committees of MAB/UNESCO and of UNEP, etc. He is also member of the European Academy of Sciences. He is the author of many books and major reports on environmental issues and of more than 400 articles.

He has organised and Chaired a large number of International Conferences and has received numerous international distinctions among which the Gold Medal of the City of Paris (Honorary Citizen), the Simon Bolivar medal of UNESCO, the Environmental Award of the Academy of Athens, Knight of st. John of Jerusalem, Knight Officer of the “National Order of Cedars” of Lebanon, Medals by the Pope Paul VI, etc.
