Panagiotis Giannopoulos

Mr. Panagiotis Giannopoulos

Panagiotis Giannopoulos studied physics and meteorology at the University of Athens.  He is a weather forecaster and presenter at Public National Radio and TV network (ERT);. Since 2002, he has been a meteorologist and forecaster at the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS). At the same time, he teaches at School of Meteorology at the HNMS. Between 1999 and 2001, he taught physics at high school students , and before that he worked as meteorologist-observer at Rhodes and Athens International Airports.
Panagiotis Giannopoulos has run numerous long-term seminars, including: “Programming and System analysis”  “Procedures to compose and implement Environmental Impact Assessment Studies”, “Consultants for Support of Quality Control Systems”, “Environmental Management Systems”, “Energy and Environment” and “Applied Meteorology” . And he was co-author of the conference paper “Αtmospheric radiation Parameterizations”, presented at the 22nd General Assembly of the European Geophysical Society, Nice in 1998.

He is a member of Greek Meteorological Society and, since 2006, also the Working Group for the Cooperation between European Forecasters (WGCEF).

"I believe that meteorologists and especially weathermen who inform the public about the weather forecast have a great responsibility to talk in a responsible and understandable way about future climate, to raise awareness on climate change and its consequences. I have joined this network because communication and interaction with the other weather presenters is definitely a great help to better achieve this goal.

I always try to find the right occasions and new attractive ways to talk about global warming. I thought one of them could be stamps used as a visual aid, especially for children. See http://climatechange.dreamhosters.com (in English)"

Mr. Dimitrios Ziakopoulos, Hellenic National Meteorological Service

Dimitrios Ziakopoulos is the director of the National Meteorological Centre, Hellenic National Meteorological Service, Athens , Greece.

He has done weather bulletin presentation on the public TV since 1982, and he is responsible for the Severe Weather warnings for Europe “METEOALARM”.  He is a state consultant in the fields of extreme weather phenomena and natural disasters and a member of the Working Group for the Cooperation of European Forecasters (WGCEF).

Dimitrios Ziakopoulos has written books on meteorology.

"The CBN- E gives its members more credibility and impetus to inform European citizens on how to fight climate change, along with new ideas and resources in order to achieve this goal. Constant vigilance from citizens and policy makers is crucial especially at this time when the physical variability of climate often fail to reveal the effects of human induced climate change. Furthermore, economic crisis threaten to block the necessary measures to combat it.

My participation to raise awareness on climate change has two sides:
- I recently published a book of “popular” Meteorology where climate change issues cover more than 100 pages
- I give lectures on climate change at the University of Athens, at schools, at amateur meteorologists groups and at seminars, which are organised by public or private bodies."
