GMO cultivation under under food and feed legislation

Basic Legislation: Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003

The placing on the market of GMO food and feed or food and feed products containing or consisting of GMOs is regulated by Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003 on genetically modified food and feed. In line with the "one door, one key" principle, an authorisation for cultivation of GMOs can be obtained under Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003 when the uses include food or feed. The Regulation foresees that the environmental risk assessment for cultivation of GMOs has to be done in accordance with the requirements of Directive 2001/18/EC, for which DG ENV is responsible.
