Information for investors and data controllers

The Commission has monitored the development of a Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA) Template for smart grid and smart metering systems written by the main stakeholders of the smart grid sector taking into account the opinions of data protection authorities and energy regulators. It is aimed at those investing in smart grids so that they can identify and anticipate risks to data protection, privacy and security, and it recommends safeguards in proportion to these risks.

There are also guidelines on how to promote and implement the DPIA Template (Commission Recommendation 2014/724/EU). Specifically, the Commission recommends a two year test phase during which data controllers are encouraged to apply the template to real-life cases with the support of data protection authorities.
