EU rules on energy efficiency in buildings: share your views!

3 July 2015

A new public consultation has just opened on the EU's Energy Performance of Buildings Directive. Open until 31 October 2015, this consultation offers you the chance to give feedback on EU rules designed to improve the energy efficiency of buildings.

Under the 2010 Energy Performance of Buildings Directive, energy performance certificates must be included in all advertisements for the sale or rental of buildings, EU countries must establish inspection schemes for heating and air conditioning systems, all new buildings must be nearly zero-energy by the end of 2020, and EU countries must set minimum energy performance requirements for new buildings and renovations.

Buildings account for around 40% of the EU's energy consumption with older buildings being much less energy-efficient. By improving energy efficiency, the EU could reduce its energy consumption by 5-6%.

This public consultation launches a review of the Directive which is due by 1 January 2017.
