Addressing barriers to storage technologies for increasing the penetration of intermittent energy sources (STORIES)

Grid issues are a major barrier for higher penetration of Renewables, especially in remote or outlying regions, including islands. The penetration of Renewables in weak electricity grids could increase if energy storage methods were adopted. The aim of the project is to make concrete suggestions for changes in policies and regulations covering Renewable installations on island grids so as to promote energy storage solutions to increase Renewables penetration. Partners coming from countries that include islands, both from Southern and Northern Europe, and two European networks/councils will work together, exchange experiences from their countries and examine the effect of different environmental conditions and regulatory frameworks on Renewable market development and will give STORIES action a European character.

Results

  • Identification of all suitable technical, financial, and legal solutions implemented in other European regions and existing experiences in other parts of the world, that can be adopted in European island regions in order to increase renewable energies penetration.
  • Assessment and mapping of the national regulatory and legislative framework of all Member States applicable in remote or outlying regions, such as the islands.
  • Development of methods for co-operation between energy storage devices and RES installations on island systems.
  • Assessment of the potential impact of co-operation between energy storage devices and RES installations in terms of power system operation impact. Emphasis was given on the additional operational benefits brought by energy storage for rather high RES penetration.
  • Quantification of the social, economic and environmental benefits of energy storage applications and grid control systems.

Lessons learned

  • High potential for RES increase in islands through various energy storage power systems exists.
  • Implementing hybrid RES and energy storage power systems is technically feasible & economically viable.
  • Local & National Energy policy makers are very interested in adopting the results of the project.
