Expanding the Benchmarking and Energy management Schemes in SMEs to more Member States and Candidate Countries (EXBESS)

Download PDFDownload PDF
ExBESS supports SMEs from the food & drink industry, textile industry, breweries and industrial laundries improving their energy efficiency. Implementing an energy management system is the best way for a company to integrate energy matters in day to day management and to find and use energy saving potentials. When energy costs are increasing energy management becomes interesting for companies. Often SMEs do not have the human resources and knowledge to implement energy management. ExBESS offers easy tools updated from BESS, such as an energy management implementation model and an e-learning system on the website. The international benchmarking scheme for specific energy consumption is extended to new sectors and offers the possibility to compare specific energy consumption with a large number of other companies from the same sector. The benchmarking scheme is based on the successful benchmarking scheme of BESS, which concluded in 2007. Thus, ExBESS is extending the BESS concept and tools to 8 more countries. ExBESS is the opportunity for SMEs in Europe to improve their energy efficiency and reduce energy costs and to participate in an international benchmarking scheme.

Results

  • At least 80 pilot companies from the food & drink, breweries, textile and laundry sectors in 8 European countries will test all updated energy management supporting and benchmarking tools including the E-learning system. The feedback will be used to make the tools even more user friendly and in line with actual energy management requirements of SMEs.
  • A fully operational, updated, interactive web based benchmarking and e-learning system for implementation of energy management to increase the adoption of energy efficiency measures in SMEs
  • A handbook for SMEs
  • Recommendations for policymakers for follow-up activities
  • Dissemination activities to promote the use of the tools the awareness amongst SMEs and policy makers of the application of benchmarking and energy management for SMEs.

Lessons learned

  • Taking into account the limited resources of SME’s, the tools- and e-learning scheme need to be simple and easy to use, without discarding items that are essential to achieve energy efficiency on SME level.
  • The participation of SME’s in energy efficiency projects depends at least in part on national socio-economic characteristics and on actual national developments.
