A Strategy for the sustainable use of wood and its implementation as base for legislative measures on regional level (ASTWOOD)

Download PDFDownload PDF
The project aims to develop a strategy development guide which helps public administrations increase the use of locally available biomass resources for producing wood chips and pellets for domestic heating. The consortium also plans to create an implementation model which is transferable to any other European region taking into account policy and legal initiatives, and additional promotional measures, such as demonstration projects, education, and dissemination. ASTWOOD will include the following steps: - Market Study on the availability of wood as a raw material in the three regions and current or potential buyers or consumers. - Based on models in other regions, development of a concept model, a strategy paper and an implementation model. - Creation of the strategy development guide and implementation through pilot initiatives in the three regions - Dissemination including visits to the pilot units.

Results

  • Within the three regions involved: - Demonstration projects - Proposal of a set of policy and legal measures - New born industrial projects in these regions
  • At the EU level: - Implementation Model - Strategy Development Guide

Lessons learned

  • Forest Management and the cleaning of forest is a critical step for a correct valorisation of the biomass. In the three regions involved in ASTWOOD project, the forest management is not optimised
  • The lack of information about the biomass uses and application in domestic heating was identified as one of the barriers for the development of the market
