The 6th International Conference on Lignocellulosic Ethanol was organised jointly by DG ENER and all major companies in the lignocellulosic ethanol industry.
The conference gathered about 200 participants from 36 countries including USA, Brazil, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Korea, India, and Ukraine, in addition to EU countries. Speakers included governmental experts from the European Commission, FAO, IEA, Biofuture Platform, Brazil and India; and from project developers such as Biochemtex (Italy), Clariant (Germany), Shell, ST1 (Finland), DSM/POET (Netherlands/USA), Praj Industries (India), Inbicon (Denmark), Borregaard (Norway), De Smet (Belgium).
EU companies are global leaders in lignocellulosic ethanol technology. All the plants built in the EU and elsewhere are based on knowledge developed in EU countries, especially in the area of enzymes and yeasts. The future development of the lignocellulosic industry in the EU is still dependent on regulatory risks related to the RED II framework. However, significant progress has been achieved by all large scale projects and the industry is ready to invest, subject to robust and stable policies.
