Humanitarian aid

ECHO (European Community Humanitarian Office) is supporting many actions are directed towards helping people who have been disabled by landmines. For example, 1.43 mio have been granted for a Mines Awareness Programme in former Yugoslavia and a programme for the rehabilitation of victims disabled by mines in Iraq.

ECHO also has a network of correspondents in operational areas, which oversee the programmes conducted by its non-governmental partners. The representatives' main tasks are reporting on the progress of a project, and, when needed, helping in the preparation of local strategies, whether as short-term relief, rehabilitation from damage, or as a spur for long term self-sustainability. Numerous projects are concerned with the fabrication of prostheses and technical help devices.
