The proposed investment project involves the design, the construction and the financing of the extension, 3,5 km long, of Line 2 of Athens Metro to Ilion, including 3 new stations within the boundaries of Ilion Municipality. The topographical survey is completed and the geological and geotechnical survey has been contracted. Multiple scenarios are being examined including operation, maintenance and exploitation.

This extension of Line 2 is foreseen to serve 51.000 passengers on a daily basis. Moreover, it is estimated to serve 46.500 citizens and 5.500 working places in areas very close to the stations. It is estimated to reduce the daily number of circulating private vehicles and lead to CO2 emissions reduction of 46 tons/day.
It is anticipated to upgrade significantly life quality in urban areas through optimization of transport time and reduction of noise levels and environmental pollution and in particular in the areas of Palatiani, Petroupolis, Ilion and Ag. Anargiroi.
Precisely, the proposed investment project: advances the continuous integration of transport infrastructure and transport policy development, promotes European Infrastructure Standards, optimizes accessibility facilities, strengthens Interconnectivity and Regional Integration, addresses the functioning city including peri-urban zones, contributes at ensuring full cooperation on infrastructure interoperability, contributes catching up delayed reform, restructuring and modernization of the transport sector, should involve all relevant actors, notably Member State authorities, regional and local authorities, the industry and the business community.

The project cost breaks down: CW: €227,5m (65%), E/M systems: €70m (20%), Rolling stock: €52,5m (15%). The project duration is estimated at 6 years.
The proposed business model is that of a PPP. During the operational phase, the project revenues will come from ticket sales, from advertising, parking fees from transfer stations, other commercial activities, as well as availability payments by the state.

The pending introduction to the Greek Parliament of legislation regarding public works and permitting as well as of legislation that integrates 2014 EU Directives 23, 24 & 25, regarding public procurement contracts, will lead to the resolution of potential risks and / or bottlenecks relating to the process leading up to the contracting stage and to the monitoring of the project for the whole period of construction and operation.
