"Development of the production process of biological fertilizers and their application for food and feed crops in Tuscan agriculture" (FERTIBIO)

L’obiettivo è quello di sviluppare e validare biofertilizzanti per specie erbacee e arbustive per migliorare la fertilità del suolo e ridurre l'uso di fertilizzanti minerali, mantenendo la produttività delle colture e migliorando la qualità delle rese.

Description of activities (native language):

- realizzazione di due prototipi per la produzione di biofertilizzanti: uno per la produzione in vitro ed in coltura axenica di funghi micorrizici arbuscolari (AMF), di batteri e di altri funghi benefici ed uno per la produzione di inoculo grezzo (spore, ife, radici colonizzate) di AMF (inoculo omogeneizzato e concentrato);
- produzione di diverse tipologie di biofertilizzanti;
- collaudo su diverse colture di pieno campo ed in ambiente protetto dei biofertilizzanti prodotti;
- formazione e informazione mediante visite aziendali e workshop;
- produzione di un manuale divulgativo dei risultati ottenuti con indicazioni operative per l’applicazione dei biofertilizzanti in agricoltura.

Description of activities (in English):

- realization of two prototypes for the production of biofertilizers: one for the production in vitro and in axenic culture of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), of bacteria and other beneficial fungi and one for the production of crude inoculum (spores, hyphae and colonized roots) of AMF (homogenized and concentrated inoculum);
- production of different types of biofertilizers;
- test of the biofertilizers formulations produced with the prototypes on different crops in field and protected environments;
- training and spread information through study visits and workshops;
- creation of a user manual of the obtained results with operational indications for the application of biofertilizers.

Inside the Farm "Azienda Agricola del Bambù" by Giorgio Elio Bocchiola, the arrangement of the greenhouse dedicated to the production of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) for the Fertibio project has begun.

Over 1,600 Rio Grande tomato seedlings were treated with 4 individually inoculated AMF isolates in addition to the control test. In addition, a variable was added to the experimentation, the peat substrate and a mix of soil, sand and zeolite. The work was carried out with the Agostini Farm "Le Prata".

All’interno l’azienda Società Agricola del Bambù di Giorgio Elio Bocchiola è iniziata la sistemazione della serra dedicata alla produzione di funghi micorrizici arbuscolari (AMF) per il progetto Fertibio.

Oltre 1.600 piantine di pomodoro Rio Grande sono state trattate con 4 isolati di AMF inoculati singolarmente oltre alla prova di controllo. Inoltre si è aggiunta una variabile alla sperimentazione, il substrato torba ed un mix di suolo, sabbia e zeolite. Il lavoro è stato realizzato con il partner del progetto Azienda Le Prata di Agostini.

Researcher and Farms achieved a strong cross-fertilization during the GO FERTIBIO. This was made possible thanks to the plurality of partners who collaborated efficiently and effectively and allowed the application of biofertilizers on different crops by passing from the laboratory scale to the field scale allowing the start of the production of biofertilizers in Tuscany, thanks to the creation of the dedicated greenhouse. Indeed, FERTIBIO taught that it is important to test biofertilizers in the field, that the mix of microorganisms must be prepared specifically for the crops to be treated and the evaluation of the plant genotype to be inoculated and of the texture of the soil and climatic conditions it is extremely important. The project also highlighted that the formulation and shelf life of the products are key points for farmers to effectively apply biofertilizers in the field.

The results on yields and quality pave the way for an ever greater application in organic regime, especially in the rest period of the land applied by many organic farms as an alternative to rotation. Biofertilizers, also efficient in conventional agriculture, can be used effectively in order to reduce the use of mineral fertilizers and pesticides with a positive environmental impact on soil fertility and the diversity of agroecosystems.

It would be useful to develop an "industrial" production protocol for biofertilizers to be applied in Tuscan agricultural areas, including peri-urban ones, creating a high quality supply chain.

Il mondo della ricerca e le aziende agricole hanno ottenuto una forte cross-fertilizzazione durante il GO FERTIBIO. Questo è stato reso possibile grazie alla pluralità dei partner che hanno collaborato in maniera efficiente ed efficace ed ha permesso l’applicazione dei biofertilizzanti su diverse colture tramite il passaggio dalla scala di laboratorio alla scala di campo consentendo l'avvio della produzione in Toscana di biofertilizzanti grazie alla realizzazione della serra dedicata. Il FERTIBIO, infatti, ha insegnato che è importante testare in campo i biofertilizzanti, che il mix di microorganismi va preparato in modo specifico per le colture da trattare, e che la valutazione del genotipo vegetale da inoculare e della tessitura dei terreni e delle condizioni climatiche è estremamente importante. Il progetto ha inoltre messo in evidenza che la formulazione e la shelf life dei prodotti rappresentano dei punti cardine affinché gli agricoltori possano applicare in maniera efficace i biofertilizzanti in campo.

I risultati sulle rese e sulla qualità aprono la strada ad una applicazione sempre maggiore in regime biologico, soprattutto nel periodo di riposo dei terreni applicato da molte aziende agricole biologiche in alternativa alla rotazione. I biofertilizzanti, efficienti anche in agricoltura convenzionale, possono essere utilizzati in maniera efficace al fine di ridurre l’uso dei fertilizzanti minerali e dei pestici con un impatto ambientale positivo sulla fertilità del terreno e sulla diversità degli agroecosistemi.

Sarebbe utile sviluppare un protocollo di produzione "industriale" dei biofertilizzanti da applicare nelle aree agricole toscane, compreso quelle periurbane, realizzando una filiera di alta qualità.

Description of the context of the project:

In Tuscany and in the European Community there is a growing interest in new models of agriculture that guarantee a reduction of release of pollutants and a rationalization of energy inputs. In this context, the Symbiotic Agriculture, which includes all the techniques aimed at restoring, safeguarding and using in the agroecosystems the symbioses between soil microorganisms and root systems of crops, is of strong and growing interest. A fruitful alliance between plants and soil microorganisms is therefore determinant for enhancing quantity and quality of crop production. The drivers of this fruitful alliance that need to be explored for the development of vital fertilizer microbial consortium to be use in agriculture are the arbuscular endomicorrhizal fungi (AMF) in the soil, but also the co-presence of other microbes in the rhizosphere that can efficiently interact with AMF.

La produzione di biofertilizzanti a livello globale è in continua crescita. Recentemente a livello comunitario i biofertilizzanti sono stati ricosciuti quali prodotti utili per la nutrizione vegetale e l’aumento della sostenibilità ambientale. Il progetto Fertibio si inserisce in un contesto come quello toscano, dove notevole è l’attenzione dedicata alla sostenibilità delle produzioni, ma che necessita di strumenti innovativi per realizzare questo importante obiettivo. Di seguito si riporta una analisi delle opportunità offerte dal progetto e degli ostacoli attualmente presenti.

Opportunità

Incrementare l’applicazione dei biofertilizzanti/biostimolanti nell’agricoltura toscana;

Realizzare biofertilizzanti sfruttando le risorse del territorio in una ottica di economia circolare;

Aumentare la fertilità del suolo promuovendo la conservazione della sostanza organica ed incrementare la quantità e qualità delle produzioni agricole in una ottica di incremento delle sostanze bioattive nei prodotti agricoli tal quali e trasformati.

Ostacoli

Scarsa conoscenza della potenzialità dei bioferttilizzanti;

Carenza di consulenti adeguatamente formati per il trasferimento dell’applicazione di biofertilizzanti in campo;

Carenza di esperienze applicative di biofertilizzanti sul territorio.
