Study and development of a new packaging for agricultural products, aimed at reducing the environmental impact and developping a new consumption model

Objective of the project (native language):

L’obiettivo generale è quello innovare i processi di filiera grazie all’utilizzo di nuovi materiali di imballaggio sostenibili ed ecologici, di ottimizzare l’organizzazione logistica e di migliorare i servizi sia per gli agricoltori sia per i cittadini. Nello specifico saranno realizzati dei prototipi di nuovi imballi sostenibili, riutilizzabili e innovativi per la preparazione, il confezionamento, la vendita e il consumo dei prodotti agricoli a breve scadenza e per la gestione delle grandi quantità durante i periodi di massima produzione.

Objective of the project (in English):

The general objectives are: to innovate the supply chain processes thanks to the use of new sustainable and ecological packaging materials, to optimize the logistics organization, to improve the services for both farmers and citizens. Specifically, prototypes of new sustainable, reusable and innovative packaging will be created for the preparation, the packaging, the sale and the consumption of short shelf-life agricultural products and for the management of large quantities during periods of maximum production.

On a general level, the expected results of the Innovation Plan will refer mainly to the implementation of two prototypes of innovative, ecological, sustainable and plastic-free packaging: one aimed for a better management and conservation of fresh products along the supply chain; the other designed for the possibility of consuming processed and / or cooked agricultural foods in any place, such as in the "take away" mode.
The expected results are attributable to the following areas:
- Increased logistical efficiency due both to the decrease in the ratio between the transported weight and its volume, as well as to reduction the of product damages;
- Strengthening of supply chain relations: the new packaging will allow all the involved subjects of the supply chain to self-organize at their best in order to optimize both the products exchange planning and the upstream production programming;
- Commercial strengthening of short-chain agricultural products: sales increase due to the likely expansion of the local market towards new sales channels and to the realted increase of the products value per se thanks to its transformation into ready-to-eat foods;
- Improvement of environmental sustainability
- Implementation of supply chain services: the new packaging will make it possible to develop new forms of purchase and consumption.

A livello generale i risultati attesi del Piano d’Innovazione faranno riferimento principalmente all’implementazione di due prototipi di imballaggi innovativi ecologici, sostenibili e plastic-free, finalizzati da una parte alla migliore gestione e conservazione dei prodotti freschi lungo la filiera e dall’altra alla possibilità di consumare i cibi agricoli trasformati e/o cucinati in qualsiasi luogo, con la modalità “take away”.
I risultati attesi sono riconducibili ai seguenti ambiti:
- Aumento dell’efficienza logistica dovuta da una parte alla riduzione del rapporto tra il peso trasportato e il suo volume, dall’altra alla riduzione delle rotture dei prodotti;
- Rafforzamento dei rapporti di Filiera: i nuovi imballaggi, consentiranno a tutti i soggetti della filiera coinvolti di organizzarsi al meglio per ottimizzare la pianificazione dello scambio dei prodotti e anche la programmazione produttiva a monte;
- Potenziamento commerciale dei prodotti agricoli a filiera corta: incremento delle vendite attraverso la probabile espansione del mercato locale verso più canali e relativa valorizzazione del prodotto tal quale grazie alla sua trasformazione in prodotti pronti al consumo;
- Miglioramento della sostenibilità ambientale
- Implementazione di servizi in ambito di filiera: i nuovi packaging consentiranno di sviluppare nuove forme di acquisto e consumo.
