Selective approach Phytophthora Seed potatoes

Objective of the project (native language):

● Met de gecombineerde innovatieve aanpak van bestrijding Phytophthora en looftrekken / wortelsnijden ontstaat door kwaliteitsverbetering een versterking van de biologisch aardappelketenen. Naar verwachting gaat dat samen met een opbrengststijging van 5%.
● Daarnaast worden innovatieve machines ontwikkeld, wordt de marktpositie van het biologisch pootgoed verbeterd en komt het tot een vermindering van het gebruik van fossiele brandstoffen door het uitfaseren van loofbranden.

Objective of the project (in English):

● The combined innovative approach to combating Phytophthora and haulm / root cutting results in a strengthening of the organic potato chains through quality improvement. This is expected to be accompanied by an increase in revenue of 5%.
● In addition, innovative machines will be developed, the market position of organic seed potatoes will be improved and there will be a reduction in the use of fossil fuels by phasing out deciduous fires.

In dit project worden aantasting van de gewassen door Phytophthora infestans in een vroeger stadium bestreden met een methode die de plant niet dood. Het gewas kan gewoon doorgroeien zonder dat de ziekte zich verspreid, wat een hogere opbrengst geeft en de milieuschade verminderd.
Verder wordt onderzocht of het mogelijk is om het door Phytophthora aangetast bladweefsel te doden door kortstondige blootstelling aan infrarood straling en hete lucht. Phytophthora en aangetast weefsel zijn namelijk gevoeliger voor warmte dan gezonde gewassen. Hierdoor wordt het gewas weer grotendeels infectievrij.

Description of activities (in English):

In this project, crop damage caused by Phytophthora infestans at an earlier stage is controlled by a method that does not kill the plant. The crop can simply continue to grow without the disease spreading, which gives a higher yield and reduces the environmental damage.
Furthermore, it is being investigated whether it is possible to kill the leaf tissue affected by Phytophthora by short-term exposure to infrared radiation and hot air. Phytophthora and affected tissue are in fact more sensitive to heat than healthy crops. This makes the crop largely free of infection again.

Description of the context of the project:

In de biologische landbouw moet op dit moment de schimmelziekten Phytophthora infestans volvelds worden bestreden door het loof te verbranden. De nadelen van het loofbranden zijn: opbrengstverlies door het te vroeg doden van de bovengrondse stengeldelen, de uitstoot van CO2 en rook door open verbranding en de kosten van propaangas. Bovendien zijn door wortelsnijden en looftrekken er geen mogelijkheden meer voor het stilleggen van de sapstromen in de plant. En dan nog blijft het risico bestaatn op knolaantasting door deze schimmel.
