Reducing the use of plastic materials in forage preservation for a sustainable milk production - Plastic-Less-Milk-Sustainability

Objective of the project (native language):

L'obiettivo è la riduzione dei consumi di plastica, impiegata per la conservazione dei foraggi nelle aziende zootecniche: teli per la copertura delle trincee degli insilati (filiera Grana Padano e latte alimentare); reti di imballaggio dei fieni (filiera Parmigiano Reggiano), che possono rappresentare sino al 90% della plastica usata in azienda. Saranno valutati su scala aziendale: i) teli per insilati che permetteranno una riduzione del 45% del consumo di plastica, ii) reti per i fieni che permetteranno fino all’eliminazione del consumo di polietilene.

Objective of the project (in English):

The objective is to reduce the consumption of plastics, used by the livestock farms in the conservation of fodder: sheets for covering the silage trenches (Grana Padano supply chain and drinking milk); hay packing nets (Parmigiano Reggiano supply chain), which may represent up to 90% of the plastic used in the company. The following items will be assessed on company scale: i) silage sheets that will allow a 45% reduction in plastic consumption, ii) hay nets that will allow up to the elimination of polyethylene consumption.

Short summary for practitioners (in English):

Addressing the strategy "From Farm to Fork" requires making milk production as independent as possible from disposable plastic materials.
We might expect, in the first place, to contribute to a quantitative estimate of the phenomenon, in order to subsequently investigate concretely applicable solutions (new materials) to reduce the use of plastic materials. Starting from the tests on new materials and the analysis of the involved production systems, we expect to find answers to how relieve (at least by 40%) the production chains from the complex disposal of several tons of films and plastic nets.
The use of materials with a low percentage of disposable plastic will reduce the management of the main kind of plastic waste present in livestock farms. Since biodegradable and compostable nets will be used in place of PE nets, we expect a 45% reduction in the plastic consumption for the covering silage and the elimination of the problems related to the storage and disposal of plastic for hay packaging.
The realization of the project will significantly increase the sustainable milk production for the two PDOs considered in the Plan.
Finally, we will assay the perception towards the plastic consumption of the several players involved in the milk supply chain, including farms, dairies and final consumers.

Per rispondere alla strategia "From Farm to Fork" è necessario rendere la produzione di latte il più possibile indipendente da materiali plastici monouso.
È realistico prevedere che si possa contribuire in primo luogo ad una stima quantitativa del fenomeno per poi cercare soluzioni concretamente applicabili (nuovi materiali) per la riduzione delle materie plastiche. Dalle prove sui nuovi materiali, e dall’analisi dei sistemi produttivi coinvolti ci aspettiamo risposte sulla possibilità di alleggerire le filiere coinvolte (almeno del 40%) dal complicato smaltimento di svariate tonnellate di film e reti plastiche.
L’impiego di materiali con una bassa percentuale di plastica monouso permetterà di ridurre la gestione del principale rifiuto plastico presente nelle aziende zootecniche. Grazie all'uso di reti biodegradabili e compostabili in sostituzione alle reti di PE, si prevede una riduzione del 45% del consumo di plastica per la copertura degli insilati e l’eliminazione della problematica legata allo stoccaggio e smaltimento della plastica per l’imballo del fieno.
La realizzazione del progetto permetterà di aumentare in modo significativo la produzione sostenibile del latte per le due DOP considerate nel Piano.
Infine, verrà valutata la sensibilità dei vari attori della filiera del latte, quali aziende agricole, caseifici e consumatori finali, verso i consumi di plastica.
