Objective of the project (native language):

Obiettivo del GO è di mettere a punto un prototipo in grado di catturare l’ammoniaca e le polveri dalla fase stabulativa dei suini per ridurre le emissioni in atmosfera, favorendo al contempo il benessere animale e la salute dei lavoratori. Il sistema preleva l’aria dalle sale rimuovendo ammoniaca e polveri catturandola in una soluzione di solfato d’ammonio. Questa può essere valorizzata miscelandola con la frazione solida da separazione solido liquido del liquame, in modo da ridurne le emissioni di ammoniaca e gas serra e di aumentarne il contenuto di azoto nell’ottica del “nutrient recovery”.

Objective of the project (in English):

The GO aim is to develop a prototype that captures ammonia and dusts from pigs houses to reduce emissions into the atmosphere, while promoting animal welfare and workers health. The system draws air from the rooms and removes ammonia and dust capturing them in a solution of ammonium sulphate. This can be exploited by mixing it with the solid fraction from the slurry solid-liquid separation, in order to reduce its ammonia and greenhouse gases emissions and to increase its nitrogen content in the perspective of "nutrient recovery".

Il lavoro sperimentale sarà condotto con un approccio a più livelli: la realizzazione del sistema di trattamento prototipale Ammonia Washing Machine (Azione 1); il monitoraggio dell’efficienza del sistema di trattamento nel ridurre l'ammoniaca e le polveri (Azione 2) e il monitoraggio della qualità dell’aria all’interno delle sale per la salute e sicurezza addetti sul lavoro (Azione 3). Inoltre sarà analizzata la riduzione delle emissioni di ammoniaca e GHG dallo stoccaggio valorizzando la soluzione prodotta dal sistema di trattamento (Azione 4) e infine la valutazione costi benefici e la potenzialità di sviluppo della tecnologia risultante dal piano (Azione 5).

Description of activities (in English):

The experimental work will be conducted with a multi-level approach: the setup of the treatment prototype system Ammonia Washing Machine (Action 1); monitoring of the treatment system efficiency to reduce ammonia and dust (Action 2) and the monitoring of air quality inside the rooms for the workers health and work safety (Action 3). It will also be analyzed the ammonia emissions and GHG reduction from the storage exploiting the solution produced by the treatment system (Action 4) and finally the cost-benefit assessment and the development potential of the technology resulting from the plane (Action 5).

An important nutrient such as nitrogen, which in the form of ammonia emitted into the atmosphere causes so many problems, can be recovered and give life to fertilizers with a view to "nutrient recovery and reuse". It was possible to recover nitrogen and avoid ammonia emissions into the atmosphere for 0.7 kg NH3/animal place/ year in the tests conducted by sucking the air from the room (2019), while sucking the air from under slatted floor (2020) was avoided emissions per 2.4 kg NH3/animal place/year. These data show a quantifiable reduction in emissions between 20 and 66%, based on the operating conditions of the prototype. The prototype, in addition to reducing ammonia emissions, achieved a second important result: the production of a liquid solution of ammonium sulphate (394 liters / t live weight/year). The good nitrogen content (3.5%), of which 99% present in ammonia form, and the low solids content are characteristics that make it a good nitrogen matrix for fertilizing purposes. Washing the air with recirculation of the treated flow, significantly reduced the presence of ammonia in the rooms of the pigsty, resulting in an improvement in the quality of the indoor air. The incidence of the treatment on costs can become problematic in consideration of the high volatility of the prices of the DOP heavy pig and, therefore, it could be useful to economically enhance the fertilizer matrix produced and the greater environmental and social sustainability of the farms that apply solutions aimed at reducing the impact of their productions. The application of the innovation involves a quantifiable cost from 9 to 12 euro cents per kg of live weight sold.

Il prototipo, oltre che ridurre le emissioni ammoniacali, ha conseguito un secondo importante risultato: la produzione di una soluzione liquida di solfato d’ammonio (394 litri/t peso vivo/anno). Il buon tenore in azoto (3,5%), di cui il 99% presente in forma ammoniacale, e il ridotto contenuto di solidi sono caratteristiche che la rendono una buona matrice azotata a fini fertilizzanti.
Il lavaggio dell’aria con ricircolo del flusso trattato ha significativamente ridotto la presenza di ammoniaca nelle sale delle porcilaie, determinando un miglioramento della qualità dell’aria interna.
L’incidenza del trattamento sui costi può divenire problematica in considerazione dell’elevata volatilità delle quotazioni del suino pesante DOP e, pertanto, potrebbe essere utile valorizzare economicamente la matrice fertilizzante prodotta e la maggior sostenibilità ambientale e sociale degli allevamenti che applicano soluzioni atte a ridurre l’impatto delle loro produzioni. L’applicazione dell’innovazione comporta un costo quantificabile dai 9 ai 12 centesimi di euro per kg di peso vivo venduto.
