Bioashes for advanced agri-food production & soil fertility Ash4soiL

Objective of the project (native language):

Preliminarnim screeningom kod partnera će se odabrati 5 optimalnih (pH<6.0) parcela, na kojima će se provesti detaljna pedološka istraživanja, te će se aplicirati bio pepeo u raznim dozama kako bi se iduće 2 vegetacijske sezone istražio utjecaj na: a) fizikalno-kemijske i mikrobiološke promjene tla, te b) visinu i kakvoću poljoprivrednih kultura. U laboratorijskim uvjetima će se izraditi inkapsulirana forma bio pepela sa produženim djelovanjem i aplikativnija u odnosu na bio pepeo, te će se kinetičkim pokusima utvrditi kemijsko djelovanje mikrokapsula. Također, obaviti će se detaljna karakterizacija pepela/mikrosfera, naprednim mikroskopskim i minerološkim analizama.

The main objectives of the project are: a) to study the impacts of different bioash rates (from biomass-fuelled power plant facility) on physico-chemical and microbiological changes in soil through 2-year field experiments in order to improve agri-food production and fertility on acid and nutrient-deficient soils, b) to study the possibility of using bioash as a raw material for the production of a novel micro-capsulated product (with prolonged action vs. raw bioash) through a lab-based study, and c) to determine the dynamics of release of active substances from microcapsules through kinetic experiments.

Through preliminary screening, 5 plots (with soil pH<6.0) will be selected for detailed pedological surveys and for application of bioash at different rates to study the effects on: a) physico-chemical and microbiological changes in soil and b) vegetative growth, yield and quality of agricultural crops. Under controlled conditions, an encapsulated form of bioash (with prolonged action and more user-friendly vs. bioash form) will be created, and its chemically induced effect will be determined by kinetic experiments. Also, through advanced microscopic and mineralogical analyzes a detailed characterization of the bioash/microspheres will be performed.

Ash is a significant by-product (waste) of various biomass-fuelled facilities (thermal power plants, heating plants, dryers), which must be adequately disposed of, or preferably recycled. The project is aiming to study the effects of bioash application for the neutralization of acidic soils (pH 12) and enriched with Ca/Mg/P/K minerals. As part of the pedological studies, 5 plots with acidic soils will be selected and treated with different bioash dosages. During the next 2 growing seasons, agricultural crops will be grown on ash-treated plots, following the regular agrotechnical operations, and the effects of the ash application on: i) physico-chemical and microbiological changes in soil, as well ii) yield and quality of crops will be studied. Additionally, the possibility of using bioash for the production of novel, more applicative (vs. bioash) microcapsulated form will be performed in lab conditions through kinetic experiments. The novel bioash-based products, as well as their precursor, will be in detail examined by advanced microscopic and mineralogical analyzes. The project results will be useful to main stakeholders (farmers, consultants, industrial partners, project developers) in agri-food production on acidic and/or low-nutrient soils, whether in conventional or organic farming. Finally, the project outcomes will be useful for ministries and regulation authorities in further promotion of bioash on agricultural and forestry soils by improving the existing regulations.

Pepeo je značajan nusproizvod (otpad) raznih postrojenja na biomasu (termoelektrana, toplana, sušara), te ga je potrebno na odgovarajući način zbrinuti, odnosno reciklirati. Projekt se temelji na ispitivanju utjecaja primjene biopepela za neutralizaciju kiselih tala (pH12) i obogaćen mineralima Ca/Mg/P/K. Pedološkim istraživanjem odabrat će se 5 parcela sa kiselim tlima kojima gospodare partneri, te će se na njima aplicirati razne doze biopepela. Tijekom naredne 2 vegetacijske sezone, na parcelama će se uzgajati poljoprivredne kulture uz uobičajene agrotehničke operacije, te će se istražiti utjecaj dozacije pepela na fiziklano-kemijske i mikrobiološke promjene u tlu, te visinu i kakvoću prinosa test kultura. Također, u laboratorijskim uvjetima će se ispitati mogućnost upotrebe biopepela za proizvodnju novih, aplikativnijih formi – mikrokapsula, sa produženim djelovanjem u odnosu na sirovinu, a što će se testirati kinetičkim pokusima. Nove forme, mikrokapsule i biopepeo će se detaljno analizirati naprednim mikroskopskim i minerološkim analizama. Rezultati istraživanja će ponajprije biti od iznimne koristi za sve one koji se bave poljoprivrednom proizvodnjom na zemljištima čija su tla kisela i/ili slabije opskrbljena fito-hranivima, bilo u konvencionalnoj ili ekološkoj proizvodnji. Rezultate istraživanja će moći koristiti i resorno ministarstvo za daljnju regulaciju i unapređenje korištenja biopepela na poljoprivrednim i šumskim tlima u RH, unapređenjem postojećih pravilnika.

Description of the context of the project:

U RH trenutno je važeći Pravilnik o zaštiti poljoprivrednog zemljišta od onečišćenja u kojemu je definiran sadržaj organskih onečišćujućih tvari i teških metala u poboljšivačima/kondicionerima tla. Međutim, u Pravilniku nisu regulirane, kao što je to u nekim članicama EU, maksimalne dozacije, kao i vremenska ograničenja o upotrebi kondicionera poput bio pepela biomase na poljoprivrednim i šumskim površinama.
