Intestinal health and welfare of horses: can spent grain be developed into a feed supplement that maintains and improves the intestinal health of hors

Objective of the project (native language):

Hankkeen tavoitteena on kehittää uusi kotimainen hevosten suolistoterveyttä ylläpitävä ja parantava kaupallisesti hyödynnettävä tuote. Tuotteen avulla talliyrittäjät ja hevosten omistajat saavat pidettyä hevoset terveinä ja suorituskykyisinä. Arvioimme, että n. 7 % maamme hevosista on jonkin asteisia suolisto-ongelmia (yht. n. 5000 hevosta). Lopputuloksena juuri tallit, jotka tässä hankkeessa ovat myös alkutuottajia, tulevat hyötymään tästä kehitystyöstä.

Objective of the project (in English):

The aim of this project is to develop a new domestic and commercial feed supplement that maintains and improves the intestinal health of horses. This innovative product will help stable keepers and horse owners to keep their horses healthy and efficient. We estimate that about 7 % of the horses in Finland have intestinal problems to some degree (a total of about 5,000 horses). As a result, this project will benefit the horse stables, which are also the primary producers in this project.

Aluksi hankkeessa selvitetään mäskin mikrobistoprofiilia ja haetaan mäskille sopivaa kuivausmenetelmää. Terveillä hevosilla selvitetään tuore- ja kuivatun mäskiruokinnan vaikutusta hevosen lannan mikrobiologiseen koostumukseen ja happamuuteen. Jatkossa selvitetään mäskin käyttöä suolistosairaiden hevosten tukihoitona.

Description of activities (in English):

At first, the microbiological composition of spent grain is analysed in the laboratory and a suitable drying method for spent grain is to be found to make storing of spent grain in horse stables aesier and to ensure the good quality of the horse feed. The project includes a feeding trial in which healthy horses are fed with spent grain (fresh and dried) and its effect to the composition of faecal bacterial and pH are analysed. At the later stage, the effect of spent grain on IBD diagnosed horses´ gut health is examined.

The number of horses with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) has increased in recent years. Spent grain has been used at horse clinics as a supporting treatment for horses with intestinal disorders and preliminary results have been promising. The aim of this project is to develop a domestic and commercial feed supplement by using spent grain (the main by-product of the brewing process) to maintain and improve the intestinal health of horses. The purpose of the project is to improve the profitability of primary producers and to increase plant protein self-sufficiency. The project promotes a circular economy and sustainable development becouse brewing waste can be used more effectively and less spent grain will end up to a landfill. On the whole, the project will improve the treatment of IBD horses and increase their welfare.

Hevosten suolistosairaudet ovat yleistyneet viime vuosina. Mäskiä on käytetty klinikkatyössä suolistosairaiden hevosten tukihoitona ja alustavat tulokset ovat olleet lupaavia. Hankkeen tavoitteena on kehittää uusi kotimainen hevosten suolistoterveyttä ylläpitävä ja parantava rehuvalmiste mäskistä.
Projektin tarkoituksena on parantaa alkutuotantotilojen kannattavuutta ja valkuaisrehujen omavaraisuutta sekä vähentää pienpanimoilta kaatopaikalle päätyvän mäskin määrää, mikä edistää kiertotaloutta ja kestävää kehitystä. Lisäksi hankkeen avulla pyritään kehittämään suolistosairaiden hevosten hoitoa ja parantamaan hevosten hyvinvointia.

Description of the context of the project:

The gastrointestinal problems of horses have increased. The reasons for the increase may be connected to horses´ feeding and management practices. In addition, the disease is better recognized nowadays. Sick horses cause more costs for the stable keeper becouse sick horses cannot be used with their full potential.
