The aim of Farm CO2Sink is to quantify the C sequestration potential at farm level and the reduction of GHG related to the adoption of a series of sustainable agricultural practices. Across a latitudinal gradient going from Po floodplain to the mountainous areas of Piacenza province, the CO2 sink potential will be evaluated for the following agricultural practices:
A. SRF poplar grove along Po floodplain (during establishment and after re-conversion to arable land);
B. Perennial herbaceous and SRC woody crops (re-conversion to arable land);
C. Contour strip-cropping with miscanthus in underutilized hilly areas
D. mountain beech forest (conversion of beech coppice to high forest)

Farm CO2Sink aims to compare, for four land uses in the Piacenza province, the C sequestration potential at farm level of a conventional management system with high environmental impacts with a conservative and sustainable management system. The conservation practices addressed within Farm CO2Sink are based on the reduction of inputs and aim to sequester C into the agricultural soil and to reduce the farm carbon footprint by lowering GHG emissions throughout the life cycle (from cultivation to final product).

Specifically, in the Po floodplain, we want to show through the calculation of a C balance at farm level as the sustainable management of agricultural soils associated with the cultivation of perennial biomass crops (herbaceous and woody) promotes an active balance of the soil organic matter. This result wants to be achieved not only for the establishment phase and during the cultivation phase (through inter-row cover cropping with mixture of perennial species) but after the re-conversion to arable land through the maintenance of a positive balance of the soil C sequestered during the whole crop lifespan of perennial crops.
In the in the mountainous areas, instead, we expect that the LCA study and its related eco-design show a strong reduction in carbon footprint related to some of the end-products alternative to direct combustion addressed in Farm CO2Sink such as the thatched house (from miscanthus biomass from contour strip-cropping) and wood furnishing products (from harvested wood products of beech high forest).

Farm CO2Sink ha l’obiettivo generale di individuare, in sistemi produttivi agro-forestali della Provincia di Piacenza, i sistemi conservativi più efficienti in termini di sequestro biologico del C a livello di azienda agricola e la riduzione delle emissioni di gas serra clima alteranti (GHG). Il territorio di interesse del PO è la provincia di Piacenza, dalle aree fluviali lungo il Po, passando per le zone rurali della pianura fino ai terreni declivi e ai boschi di faggio dell’alta Val Nure. Quattro sono i sistemi produttivi agro-forestali indagati : pioppicoltura in aree fluviali di pianura, coltivazione di specie poliennali da biomassa erbacee e arboree in ambienti marginali, coltivazione a strisce di miscanto lungo terreni declivi e faggeta di montagna. In Farm CO2Sink si vuole promuovere l’adozione di pratiche agricole conservative e tecniche forestali che siano in grado di massimizzare il mantenimento, e in alcuni caso promuovere ulteriormente, il sequestro biologico del C non solo a livello di azienda agricola ma anche nel prodotto finale. Per raggiungere tale obiettivo in Farm CO2Sink si condurrà una serie di sperimentazioni in campo che, abbinate ad una profonda analisi della letteratura, permetteranno di compilare un database (inventory) necessario per la redazione di un bilancio del C e di uno studio dell’impronta carbonica (LCA) a carattere territoriale (kg CO2-eq ha-1). L’output finale di Farm CO2Sink sarà uno studio di LCA che quantificherà l’impronta carbonica dei sistemi produttivi agroforestali dalla fase di coltivazione e fino all’utilizzo dei prodotti agricoli con destinazioni tradizionali (combustione diretta) o alternative quali l’arredamento (legno di faggio) e la bioedilizia (biomassa di miscanto).

The partners involved in the PEI-OG named Farm CO2Sink are a university (UCSC), 3 farms operating in the agricultural and forestry sector, two active training institutions respectively in agriculture (CRPA) and forestry (Consortium Comunalie Parma).
The overall objective of Farm CO2Sink is to quantify the C sequestration potential at farm level and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) related to the adoption of a series of sustainable agricultural practices:
A.   SRF poplar grove along Po floodplain (during establishment: inter-row cover cropping with mixture of perennial species)
B.   Perennial herbaceous and SRC woody crops (re-conversion to arable land with conservation practices);
C.   Contour strip-cropping in underutilized hilly areas (narrow strips of miscanthus alternated to wider strips of annual crops)
D.   mountain beech forest (conversion of beech coppice to high forest)
The results of the project confirm, as a whole, the environmental and economic opportunity to promote innovative forms of management in the agro-forestry territories. New agronomic techniques for traditional crops (the case of inter-row cover crops in floodplain poplar cultivation), a different organization of agricultural rotations in productive environments (the case of long-term rotation with biomass crops), co-cropping in marginal lands (the case of the contour strip cropping with miscanthus), as well silviculture with a strong naturalistic vocation (the case of high trunk management of beech forests in the Apennines), all appear to be efficient practices to increase the resilience of agro-forestry sector

Il GO Farm CO2Sink ha individuato, in sistemi produttivi agro-forestali della Provincia di Piacenza, i sistemi conservativi più efficienti in termini di sequestro biologico del C a livello di azienda agricola e la riduzione delle emissioni di gas serra clima alteranti (GHG). Quattro sono i sistemi produttivi agro-forestali che sono stati indagati all’interno di Farm CO2Sink: pioppicoltura in aree fluviali di pianura, riconversione di specie poliennali da biomassa erbacee e arboree in ambienti marginali, coltivazione a strisce di miscanto lungo terreni declivi e faggeta di montagna.
I risultati emersi dal progetto confermano, nel loro complesso, l’opportunità ambientale ed economica di promuovere forme innovative nella gestione dei territori agro-forestali. Nuove tecniche agronomiche per colture tradizionali (il caso delle cover crop interfilari nella pioppicoltura golenale), una diversa organizzazione delle rotazioni agrarie in ambienti produttivi (il caso di rotazione pluriennali con colture da biomassa), forme di coltivazione consociata in territori marginali e fragili (il caso della coltivazione a strisce di miscanto in terreni declivi), così come una selvicoltura moderna a spiccata vocazione naturalistica (il caso dell’avviamento all’alto fusto e disetanizzazione di faggete appenniniche), appaiono tutte soluzioni in grado di affrontare con efficacia le sfide agro-ecologiche più urgenti e indifferibili. Tramite la creazione di certificati di assorbimento trasparenti, il sistema di certificazione del carbon farming permetterà all’azienda agricola di percepire una premialità per l’impegno messo in atto nell’attività di decarbonizzazione ambientale dell’agricoltura.
