Research need from Focus Group: Local/regional guidelines for the implementation of innovative silvicultural practices to adapt the forests to the expected future conditions
Climate and climate change
adaptation to climate change
This is the problem:
This need for research has been identified in FG 24 on "forest practices and climate change", If you want to know more about it, check the final report of the Focus Group.
The challenges posed by climate change, although global, show strong regional differences. Considering the diversity of forest types and different management traditions across Europe, climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies must fit the region-specific climate change effects expected and local circumstances. About this, there's a lack of information enabling an effective adaptation at local level.
Therefore there's a need of future local/regional guidelines for the implementation of innovative silvicultural practices towards adaptation, covering for example the following aspects:
What to do and where?
Demonstration plots network of silvicultural practices (with intense monitoring and data analysis to produce information for landowner forest management)
DSS at the local scale (farm) (how is the forest today and what will be expected in the future in the farm with a risk assessment tool regarding changing species, practices and economics)
