Activity details
EFID, the European Foundations’ Initiative on Dementia, is committed to support the development of sustainable and inclusive environments for people living with dementia and their carers. Although EFID is applying to join the Action Group D4, it is willing to create a new action group on the challenges linked to dementia.
EFID commits to act as a catalyst to create learning and partnership opportunities for community-based projects working on improving the lives of people with dementia (PWD). In particular, EFID will promote an awareness campaign in Cyprus, through the organisation Ske Simplegmatos Kouri Ksilourikou; a joint-project on dementia-friendly tourism and leisure services in Italy and Belgium, through the organisations Rifugio Re Carlo Alberto and WZC De Weister; a practice exchange in UK, between the organisations EDUCATE and YoungDementia UK; the activities of Foton in Bruges, a dementia-friendly city in Belgium. In May 2016, a training workshop on indicators to measure the impact of dementia-friendly initiatives will offer practitioners the opportunity to reflect on the topic and network. In spring 2017, EFID will launch a call for awards to support 10 organisations up to €10.000. The prize will reward 10 best practices in Europe working on the engagement and meaningful participation of people with dementia. The expected results are: a) improved awareness of dementia; b) improved tourist services for PWD in Belgium and Italy; c) mutual learning and shared knowledge on dementia-friendly activities in UK and in Europe; d) more inclusive communities for PWD; e) creation of measurement tools/indicators for dementia-friendly initiatives and d) recognition of 10 best practice that value the expertise of PWD.
Furthermore, EFID will publish a study that maps DFCs initiatives across Europe and organise capacity development opportunities such as workshops. Through these activities, EFID commits to support social innovation initiatives addressing one of the burning societal challenges of our ageing Europe: an increasing number of citizens living well with dementia in inclusive and dementia-friendly communities.

In 2015, EFID launched a call for proposal to support joint projects and go-and-see visits enhancing the work on dementia. Go-and-see visits facilitate the exchange of ideas and best practice. Joint projects strengthen the collaboration among organisations and create new partnerships. The 6 initiatives supported were completed in February 2017.
In March 2017, a new call on "Valuing the expertise of people with dementia" has been launched. The call with reward 10 organisations up to €10.000. The award ceremony and conference is envisaged in January 2018 under the auspices of the Bulgarian Presidency of the EU.
