Activity details
Because population ageing is a central problem for many countries in the 21st century, WHO initiated a project on Global age-friendly cities in 2005, attracting a growing interest from government officials and nongovernmental and academic groups. Throughout the ten following years, many actions were undertaken and many studies were completed to propose innovative approaches, methods and solutions viewed as essential for enabling new ways of organizing society around active ageing, in order that older people should be empowered to remain socially active (Pillar 3 of the Strategic Implementation Plan, 2011). In a first step of our research, we are planning to review the papers and reports published on this topic to gather the main proposals for improving active ageing, from international, national, and local points of view (e.g. from U.Porto Ageing Network). In further steps, we are planning (a) to analyze to which extent these proposals led to concrete transformations in Porto area, (b) to examine to which extent these proposals are considered important by older people, according to the fact that they were or not implemented, and (c) to identify additional actions that older people view as important to remain and feel socially active.

Our work started in September of 2016. We began by analyzing reports from (i) academic papers, (ii) municipalities of the Porto area, (iii) large companies with headquarters in Porto, looking for proposals to improve active ageing. We are now initiating a series of interviews with municipalities and companies. We are also organizing a series of workshops (two already took place: “Cidadania, Cultura e Envelhecimento” and “Regulação Emocional ao Longo da Vida”), and conducting a survey with the public of the Universidade Popular do Porto.
