Activity details

The Increasing number of elderly people represents a great challenge to health care services and professionals. High prevalence of chronic diseases leads to prolonged therapeutic regimens. That, associated with an increasing number of treatment alternatives results in high drug intake, which is mostly beneficial to the patient. However, it also increases the incidence of drug related problems. The undergoing project has as main goals to identify and evaluate (i) potential drug interactions; (ii) patient compliance; (iii) medication regimen complexity; and (iv) potentially inappropriate medication regimens. With this project it’s expected to characterize the therapeutic profile as well as to optimize pharmacological treatments, in order to achieve therapeutic efficacy avoiding and/or minimizing drug related problems. The project is being developed in individuals older than 65 years of age, undergoing chemotherapy in three Oporto hospitals. It implies the application of a questionnaire to the elderly person or its caregiver and the consultation of the patient’s clinical files.
