On 21 January 2020, European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, Maria Gabriel, and Director-General for Education, Youth, Sport and Culture, Themis Christophidou, granted the awards to the winners of the European Commission’s first Digital Education Hackathon (DigiEduHack).
The 24-hour Hackathon took place on 3 October 2019 and gathered more than 1,700 participants from 21 countries at 33 local events to create solutions for challenges for education in the digital age.
From the 33 local winners, 10 finalists were selected and three winning teams were announced following a public vote online:
- ‘The Cubers’ from ICS Capozzi-Galilei School in Valenzano, Italy, proposed a ‘Science Escape Room’ – a virtual tool to provide students with an immersive learning experience and enhance digital education in science literacy
- ‘Students4Students’ from inLab FIB at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia in Barcelona, Spain, devised a mobile platform – ‘Student4Students’ – to connect high school pupils interested in careers in information technology (IT) with university IT students
- ‘Teaming 4.0’ from the Institute of technology and higher education in Monterrey, Mexico, formulated an app – ‘Teaming 4.0’ – using artificial intelligence (AI) to analyse skills data to help create stronger teams
The winning teams were awarded €5,000 to implement their solutions.
Commissioner Gabriel emphasised the innovative contribution of these solutions to digital education and pronounced team members ‘DigitalEducation Ambassadors’.
