Slovenian Presidency of the European Union

The second presidency for the country on a special anniversary

The second presidency of the European Union for Slovenia falls this year on a very important anniversary, the 30 years of its independence from Yugoslavia in 1991.

The first Slovenian Presidency took place in 2008, when Slovenia was the first of the newcomer states joining the EU in 2004 to host the Presidency of the Council of the European Union for the usual 6 months rotation.
In fact, since the signing of the Lisbon Treaty in 2009 – the Presidency of the Council (Consilium) rotates among the Member States every 6 months. The three Member States holding the presidency in a period of 18 months form a trio – a group that sets long-term goals and prepares the agenda, determining the major issues addressed by the Council over such a time.
The current trio is made up of the presidencies of the Germany, Portugal and Slovenia.

So now, 13 years later, Slovenia began its second Presidency on the 1st of July. It will be hosting this new presidency in the age of digitalisation and SCIC interpreters are accepting the challenge, as one of our interpreters explains in the following video produced by European Commission interpreters. Its aim is to raise awareness about the Slovenian Presidency, the country and the language and to prepare all interpreters for this new adventure.

We hope you enjoy it!
