Practical tips and advice for a better video remote interpreting (VRI) experience

As an interpreter you should watch these videos because they will make working from your home office easier. They will give you a better understanding of what you can do to make your interpreting assignment run as smoothly as possible. They will also show you what you can do to ease the mental and physical burden that you face, both during and after the assignment.
Users of interpreting services should also watch the videos. With a better understanding of how the interpreter has to work, civil servants can contribute to a successful interpreting assignment.
Extensive insight work
VRI is a good alternative to other forms of interpretation. It is important that the equipment and surroundings are utilised in the best possible way. And it is important that the civil servant who has set up the meeting takes responsibility for conducting the discussion, manages the dialogue and ensures regular breaks. IMDi (the Norwegian Directorate of Integration and Diversity, www.imdi.no ) has made two instructional videos which, based on how the interpreter has to work, show how small simple improvements can contribute to a better VRI experience. The films are based on extensive insight work and have been made in collaboration with interpreters, physiotherapists and psychologists.
VRI is a focus area for the Norwegian Directorate of Integration and Diversity (IMDi). Increased and better use of VRI allows efficient organisation of interpreting assignments. This increased access to qualified interpreters contributes to civil servants across the country being able to cover their need for interpreters.
IMDi aims to increase the proportion of interpreting assignments performed via video, and works to ensure that interpreters, professionals and minority language speakers in Norway see VRI as an effective and positive form of interpreting.
