24/01/2017 : Economic Workshop: Fiscal policy and public investment for relaunching potential growth

On Tuesday 24 January 2017, DG ECFIN organised its annual workshop on Fiscal Policy, dedicated this year to the role of fiscal policy and public investment in relaunching potential growth. The workshop was a one-day event featuring two sessions of analytical presentations followed by discussants’ analysis and debate.

The first session presented and discussed papers identifying the most efficient fiscal policies to reignite growth and productivity in the European Union.
The second session of the workshop included selected papers on public investment under fiscal constraints.
High-profile authors and discussants from the academia and international institutions distilled lessons on how to best conduct fiscal policy to avoid risk of prolonged low growth in Europe. Government actions play an important role in relaunching potential growth over the medium term. In this context, a specific role is played by public investment, which was identified as a promising avenue to boost GDP.
