Stakeholders Meeting on Disaster Prevention

The European Commission - Directorate-General for Environment, Civil Protection Unit - held a broad public consultation process in the run-up to the presentation of a Communication on the development of a new EU initiative on disaster prevention, expected by the end of 2008.

A meeting involving major stakeholders interested in Disaster Prevention issues was held in Brussels on Monday 14 April 2008, from 10h00 to 18h00.

The purpose of the meeting was to seek the opinion of a wide spectrum of public and private interests on the need, the objectives and the content of a possible new Community initiative on disaster prevention.

The meeting was open to representatives of any public or private organisation - administrations, businesses, non-governmental organisations, etc.

Three focus group meetings, respectively on the economic impacts of prevention, on environmental disasters - in particular forest fires, and on vulnerability assessment were held in Brussels between 19 and 21 May 2008.
