Refugee communities are best placed to identify and propose the most efficient ways to improve their own everyday lives. In Trikala, Central Greece, the community decided to create a football team. After all, sport restores confidence, brings joy and purpose, teaches rules and discipline, and builds bridges between people. UNHCR, with the support of the European Commission, assisted with the realisation of the refugees’ initiative by providing the team with uniforms, new football shoes and transportation from the site to training and the football field when needed.
The first “official” game of the Trikala Refugee Team vs. Heavy Metal United, a local team that participates in solidarity actions, ended with a 5 to 2 final victory to the refugees and whetted the appetite for more games in the future.
