Heavy flooding has left parts of southern Malawi devastated. The districts of Nsanje, Chikwawa, Phalombe and Zomba are the most affected. According to Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA), approximately 638 000 people have been affected in 15 districts prompting the government to declare a ‘state of disaster’ and appealing for international assistance. The UN estimates that 79 people died and 153 are still missing.
The European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection department (ECHO) has given €3 million to assist the affected families, not only in Malawi, but also in neighbouring Mozambique and Madagascar.
