In August 2021, immense forest fires broke out in various locations in Greece, including forests close to the city of Athens, on the Peloponnese, on Evia, Rhodes and Crete.
Greece activated the EU Civil Protection Mechanism on 3 and 5 August. This was the start of one of the largest operations in the history of the Mechanism.
We have travelled to Greece to see first-hand how the EU is providing support to the country in the fight against forest fires.
EU-coordinated firefighting operations are a great example of EU solidarity in action.
As the fire risk remains high in the country, the EU stands ready to channel further support to Greece whenever needed.
