Ethiopia provides South Sudan refugees an escape from brutal conflict

With over 900 000 refugees, Ethiopia is the second largest refugee-hosting nation in Africa after Uganda. About half are people who have fled brutal conflict in the world’s newest country, South Sudan.

A steady stream of refugees continues to arrive, with sudden large-scale influxes whenever violence in South Sudan flares up. EU humanitarian funds help the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and various NGOs to assist the newcomers who have sought safety in Ethiopia.
