In March and April 2017 alone, a seemingly endless drought forced 60 000 Ethiopians from their homes in the Somali region. The effects of drought are still wreaking havoc with people's livelihoods and the number of displaced fail to abate. The drought has decimated livestock and left many families destitute.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) receives EU humanitarian support to help displaced families through this challenging period. EU humanitarian funding goes to the provision of shelter and essential non-food items. Women and girls receive dignity kits which include Little Sun solar lamps. Little Sun, a global social business project aimed at bringing clean, reliable, affordable energy to the 1.1 billion people in the world living in off-grid areas without electricity.
