Nature-based solutions projects tackle the climate and biodiversity crisis
Nature-based solutions (NBS) are inspired and supported by nature, they are cost-effective, simultaneously provide environmental, social and economic benefits and help build resilience; such solutions bring more, and more diverse, nature and natural features and processes into cities, landscapes and seascapes, through locally adapted, resource-efficient and systemic interventions. NBS must benefit biodiversity and support the delivery of a range of ecosystem services.
Under Horizon 2020, the European Commission have funded 30 nature-based solutions projects, with a budget of €282 million.
NBS projects cluster in different thematic Task Forces to co-produce and communicate NBS relevant knowledge: Data Management and NBS Knowledge Repository, NBS Impact Evaluation Framework, Governance, Business Models and Financial Mechanisms, NBS Communication, Co-creation for NBS.
New projects will start in 2021. They will be dealing with a broad range of topics like carbon neutral cities and improved air quality, water security and ecological quality in cities and restoring biodiversity and ecosystem services.
