As we head into a new year, we asked key policymakers involved in LIFE programme support and development what are their wishes for the programme. Here is what they answered.
Karmenu Vella, European Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries:
"My wish for next year is that LIFE gets even more recognition for the important work it does. And that the larger budget we’ve proposed from 2021 gets endorsed!"
Miguel Arias Cañete, European Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy:
"My wish is to see even more LIFE projects come up with new technologies and processes that will help us all to achieve our important climate and energy goals."
Adina-Ioana Vălean, Member of the European Parliament:
"My wish for LIFE is that it will continue to bring direct tangible results to people around the EU and to the environment we love."
Daniel Calleja Crespo, Director-General for Environment, European Commission:
"I wish for an even better integration between the LIFE's sub-programme for the environment and other sources of funding like agriculture and regional funding. A more coherent approach across sectors will benefit our economy, the environment and ultimately all EU citizens."
Mauro Raffaele Petriccione, Director-General for Climate Action, European Commission:
"My wish is to see LIFE support the transition to a low-carbon economy in the countries and regions where it is needed the most."
Veronica Manfredi, Director for Quality of Life, DG Environment, European Commission:
"My wish is that more towns, cities and regions take on board the results of LIFE projects that can make a positive difference to the quality of our air and water, and ultimately the quality of our lives.”
Humberto Delgado Rosa, Director for Natural Capital, DG Environment, European Commission:
"My wish is to see LIFE have a bigger impact at landscape-scale, with more transnational collaboration to address threats to ecosystems, species and habitats throughout their range, and more projects addressing marine biodiversity.”
Yvon Slingenberg, Director of International, Mainstreaming and Policy Coordination Directorate, DG Climate Action, European Commission:
"My wish is for LIFE to help developing and sharing the best ways to reduce emissions and increase resilience to climate change across the EU.”
Massimo Gaudina, Head of Representation in Milan, European Commission:
"My wish is that more and more local authorities become aware of the benefits LIFE projects bring, and know how to apply for funds. Europe starts local!"
Maja Mikosińska, Head of Sector in LIFE and CIP Eco-Innovation Unit, EASME - Executive Agency for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises, European Commission:
“My wish for LIFE is that it continues to deliver impressive results to the benefit of environment and EU citizens and helps translate polices into reality while adapting to new challenges.”
Tasos Vidalis, Project Manager for SOL-BRINE, winner of LIFE Awards in 2017 in the Environment category:
"My wish for LIFE is to be the tool of environmental production and a connection between research and the market. LIFE can be a programme which enables a better way of living."
