Digitalisation is one of the main challenges that European small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) face today. To provide digital solutions, SMEs need to acquire the necessary skills. This is the purpose of the “Skills for SMEs” project, which aims to research and support how SMEs can obtain the key skills needed in the fields of big data, internet of things (IoT) and cybersecurity.
European SMEs often struggle to keep up with the pace of digital transformation. Despite market volume or business growth opportunities, most SMEs keep lagging behind. On the long term, failure to harness digital opportunities push non-digital SMEs out of the market!
The digital transformation presents SMEs with an extraordinary opportunity. Digital skills development is key to benefit from the digital revolution and overcome the existing skills gaps and mismatches related to IT professionals and leadership.
The project invited key experts, SMEs and other stakeholders to participate in interviews, online surveys and six dedicated workshops that took place by the end of last year. Together, they identified ways to facilitate digital skills development for SMEs.
Ambitious skills policies and well-targeted supporting measures at EU and national levels are of utmost importance to facilitate the access of SMEs to a larger European talent pool.
This COSME project:
- Creates a shared vision for skills development for SMEs on Big Data, Internet of Things and Cybersecurity until 2023;
- Builds a toolbox facilitating the implementation of the vision, supporting measures and a roadmap;
- Deploys a monitoring mechanism to control skills gaps and track progress of the implementation in the coming years.
